The Exhibition Ground in Holešovice was founded at the occasion of the General Land Centennial Exhibition” in 1891 by separating the eastern part of the original Stromovka Park area in Bubenec and in the vicinity of the Holešovice development. On 15th March 1891, the Industrial Palace designed by Bedrich Münzberger and František Prášil was opened. Křižík’s fountain became a great attraction. It was reconstructed at the occasion of the 1991 General Czechoslovak Exhibition that took place at the Exhibition Ground.
There have been three large fires at the Exhibition Ground. The first one burned down the Brussel Pavilion at the lower part of the Ground in 1991. In 2005, the unique wooden Globe theatre burned down and in 2008 the entire left wing of the beautiful Art Nouveau Industrial Palace was destroyed by the fire.
The Holešovice Prague Exhibition Ground is an attractive and demanded exhibition area with an old tradition. It is spread on an area of 36 hectares and the Art Nouveau Industrial Palace is its dominant. Its great interior and exterior possibilities make it an excellent and popular venue for cultural, social and entertaining events in any season. It is easily accessible as it is located near the city centre and has great parking capacity. Other attractions of the Exhibition Ground include the National Museum Lapidary, Marold’s Panorama of the Battle of Lipany, Křižík’s light fountain or the Sea World Aquarium. On the west side of the Ground, there is a large park called Stromovka and the Prague Planetarium. In the north part of the Ground, there is an amusement park where the popular Mathew Fair used to take place.
The Capital City of Prague has prepared a long-term conception of development that will improve the facilities and infrastructure of the Exhibition Ground as well as its vicinity.
